Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Announces Scholarship Award Recipients


The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce today announced the recipients of two annual scholarships funded by the Chamber.

The Chamber is proud to present the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Scholarship and the John Workman Memorial Scholarship to two local deserving high school students to assist with their college funding.


The two scholarship award recipients are also recognized at a Hermosa Beach City Council meeting.





2014 Scholarship recipients are:

Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Scholarship  ($2,000):


Andrew Dates, Hermosa Beach, Mira Costa High School


Andrew Dates
is a graduating senior from Mira Costa High School where he maintained an unweighted 4.0 Grade Point Average.  Andrew was a four year member of the honor roll and member of the National Honor Society during his junior and senior years.

He was also active during his high school career with Key Club, the Science Olympiad Club, Math Club, and the Hermosa Valley School Outdoor Science Club

Andrew’s hobbies include oil and acrylic painting, basketball and debate.

In the fall, Andrew will be attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh where he will major in Bio Chemistry.

John Workman Memorial Scholarship  ($2,000):


Luke Murphy, Redondo Beach, Redondo Union High School


Luke Murphy
is a graduating senior from Redondo Union High School where he maintained a 4.67 weighted Grade Point Average.  For the past three years, Luke has been a member of the school’s Academic Decathalon team and has been captain of the team for the past two years.  He was also the President of the school’s Science Olympiad Club.

He was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a California Boys State Delegate.  His volunteer activities include serving as an Assistant Teacher and Lab Tech, a Chemistry Tutor for fellow students and an IT Assistant for Hermosa Valley School.

An avid tennis player, Luke played on the Seahawk tennis team during his first three years.

This Fall, Luke plans on attending Stanford University and major in bioengineering.


The John Workman Memorial Scholarship
was established by the Chamber in January 2012 to honor the memory of John Workman.  Workman served as Treasurer for the City of Hermosa Beach for 18 years and was an active member of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Rotary Club before his passing in November of 2011.


John’s wife Mary Ellen serves on the committee which, along with members of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, selects the recipient of the John Workman Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a student from a local high school to assist with their college funding.

Connor Kernochan, Hermosa Beach, Mira Costa High School


Connor Kernochan
is a graduating senior from Mira Costa High School where he maintained a 3.87 Grade Point Average.  Connor was a four year member of the Principal’s Honor Roll and four year scholar-athlete award winner as a member of the basketball team.  Connor was active in organizations including the Friendship Circle, which assisted children with special needs; Heart to Art, which combined art with helping children and the Model U.N., where he was a member of the 2012 National Champion Debate Team. Connor was also a founding member of “Costa Cares”, a program designed to raise money to help those in need in the local community.    

He plans to attend USC’s Marshall School of Business in the fall.


John Workman Memorial Scholarship  ($2,000):


Sawyer Fuller, Hermosa Beach, Mira Costa High School


Sawyer Fuller is a graduating senior from Mira Costa High School where she maintained a 3.27 Grade Point Average.  Sawyer is very active in Theater, taking part in a number of school performances including Fiddler on the Roof, The Apple Tree and The Wiz.  She has received acclaim for her theater work including awards from the Cal State Fullerton Theater Festival and from Mira Costa High School. This fall she plans to attend Emerson College in Boston and major in Musical Theater.

Elias Rivas, Hermosa Beach, Mira Costa High School

Elias is a graduating senior from Mira Costa High School where he was a four year member of the Mustang football team as well as a member of the National Honor Society. Elias earned a 3.97 Grade Point Average and was also very active with the school’s drama club and Model United Nations team. This fall he plans to attend Harvard while looking to major in government.

John Workman Memorial Scholarship:

Payton Lee Buckley, Hermosa Beach, Mira Costa High School

Payton Lee Buckley is a graduating senior from Mira Costa Costa High School where she maintains a 4.0 Grade Point Average and is a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll. Payton enjoys writing and documentary filmmaking and aspires to help others in the community. She also volunteers locally for Habitat for Humanity and plays guitar in her church youth group band. She has plans to attend Azusa Pacific University and major in Global studies with a minor in Theater Production.




Peyton Lee Buckley is presented the Inaugural John Workman Memorial Scholarship by the
Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors at the June 26, 2012 HB City
Council Meeting.
